So, you’ve decided to build (or rebuild) your website – amazing! But now comes the bit that tends to trip people up: the content. What do you actually need to hand over to get your website off the ground?
Here’s the truth: even the most beautifully designed website can fall flat if the content isn’t there to back it up. So whether you’re working with a designer (like me!) or trying to get your ducks in a row before you outsource, this post will walk you through what you need – and how to make the whole process way less overwhelming.
First things first: Content is your responsibility (but I’m here to help)
When we work together, the design, layout, flow and overall vibe of your website is fully in my corner. But the content – things like your images, your copy, and what needs to go where, that all comes from you.
The good news? I’ve created tools like my Launch Questionnaire to help you dig into your business goals, ideal clients and the must-haves for your site. Plus, I’ve got plenty of recommendations if you’d like help from a copywriter, photographer or content pro.
Your Website Content Checklist
1. Branding Files
These are the visual building blocks of your brand.
You’ll need to provide:
- Logos (all versions: full colour, white, mono, stacked, etc)
- Brand icons or patterns
- Brand guidelines (if you have them)
Tip: Upload these into a Google Drive or Dropbox folder and clearly label each file – future you (and me!) will love you for it.
2. Images & Photography
Professional imagery makes a website feel polished. If you don’t have a suite of brand or product photos yet, I highly recommend investing in this – I can connect you with amazing photographers or product stylists depending on your niche.
Please provide:
- A selection of high-res images (product, lifestyle, team, location – whatever’s relevant)
- Any must-use imagery (e.g., specific hero photos, backgrounds, etc)
- Clearly named image files (e.g., “Team-Jess.jpg” or “Candle-WhiteMusk.jpg”)
3. Website Copy (Words!)
This is the written content for your site – and yes, it matters a lot. It should sound like you, speak to your audience, and clearly explain what you do. If you need help with words just say the word – I can recommend lovely, strategic copywriters who specialise in website copy.
Must-haves usually include:
- Homepage intro & headings
- About page content
- Services/products descriptions
- Contact info
- Any calls-to-action (what do you want people to do?)
- Testimonials (so often forgotten!)
How to share it: Google Docs is ideal! One doc per page works best. And don’t worry if it’s not perfect – I’ll tweak things slightly to suit the design or improve readability, and you’ll always get a chance to review before we go live.
4. Ecommerce/Product Info (if relevant)
Running a shop? Here’s what I’ll need:
- Product names, prices, descriptions, variations (size, colour etc)
- Any specs (e.g., materials, dimensions, washing instructions)
- Product images (clearly named to match the product)
- Info on shipping and returns
- Group products into collections if you have lots (25+)
How to share it: This can be in a spreadsheet or doc – whatever’s easier for you to manage.
5. Legal Stuff
It’s not the fun part, but it is important. If your site collects user info (e.g. via a contact form), you’ll need a:
- Privacy Policy
- Terms & Conditions (especially if you sell online)
Need help with these? I can point you toward a couple of trusted resources or templates.
6. Extra Bits Clients Often Forget:
- Testimonials & reviews (a big trust-builder!)
- FAQs
- Any forms you want added (newsletter sign-up, intake forms, bookings etc)
- Your social media links
- Your business contact info
How to stay organised (without losing your mind)
Want to make life easier for the both of us? Here’s how:
- Create one Google Drive or Dropbox folder
- Include subfolders for Images, Copy, Branding, Products, etc
- Name everything clearly
- Ask questions if you’re unsure – I’m here to help!
The clearer your content, the faster (and more fun!) your site build will be.
Yes, content is your responsibility, but you don’t have to figure it all out solo. I’ll guide you through what’s needed at each step – and point you in the right direction if you need extra support with copywriting, photography, or planning.
Your website should feel like a reflection of your business – strategic, stylish, and so you. With the right content in hand, we can make that happen beautifully. Book a free discovery call here.
